Purpose of the Conferences

The Universal House of Justice has described the purpose of these conferences as follows:

“These conferences, then, will give the participants an opportunity to gain greater insight into the nature of the spiritual enterprise in which they are engaged, a sense of the distance traversed thus far, and a deeper understanding of the exigencies of the current stage in the unfoldment of the Divine Plan. They will strive to enhance appreciation of the privilege of being part of a community that has set its gaze upon the spiritual and material transformation of society, and of the bounty of being connected by bonds of love and camaraderie with brothers and sisters in a global effort, each one labouring within the same framework for action, all united under the sheltering shadow of the Covenant.”

Introduction & Conference Themes

INTRODUCTION: There is a mounting realization on the part of the world’s people that the decades ahead are set to bring with them challenges among the most daunting that the human family has ever had to face. The current global health crisis is but one such challenge. These challenges are a severe test of humanity’s willingness to put aside short-term self-interest and come to terms with this stark spiritual and moral reality: there is but one, interconnected human family and it shares one precious homeland.

The conviction that we belong to one human family is at the heart of the Bahá’í Faith. Bahá’u’lláh compared the world of humanity to the human body. Within this organism, millions of cells, diverse in form and function, play their part in maintaining a healthy system. The principle that governs the functioning of the body is cooperation. Its various parts do not compete for resources; rather, each cell, from its inception, is linked to a continuous process of giving and receiving. Similarly, every individual is a member of the body of humanity. Each is essentially noble, possessing a unique soul. All have a common purpose—to carry forward an ever-advancing material and spiritual civilization. All are the citizens and co-stewards of one planet, entitled to enjoy the benefits of such a civilization. If one member of the body is in anguish or distress, all the other members must necessarily suffer. This growing awareness of our common heritage and interdependent future is redefining our understanding of ourselves and challenges the ways of contemporary society.

It is now time to examine anew the possibilities before us as we continue to learn to build communities of common purpose that recognize the power of unity to heal, to transcend.
